Rio® & Rio® Plus Aqua Pump/ Power Head & Rio Hyper Flow™

PROBLEM: EXCESS NOISE FROM PUMP
SOLUTION
1. Clean the intake of the pump and impeller

a.
Disconnect the pump form the power supply prior to removing the pump from the water.

b.
Remove either the prefilter or intake filter strainer. Rinse out prefilter sponge of debris.

c.
Remove the impeller well cover.

d.
Once the impeller well cover is removed, slide both the impeller and shaft out of the main
body of the pump and clean well. Do not use any soap detergents during cleaning

e.
After the impeller and shaft are cleaned, use a small brush to clean inside of the motor housing

f.
Reassemble above parts and pump is again ready to use. Confirm that all the washer and bushing a reassembled properly.  Failure to do so will cause permanent damage to the pump.

g.
When a high amount of calcium is used and the impeller does not rotate on the shaft. Soak the impeller and shaft in 1 part vinegar to 2 parts water. Let soak 30 minutes or the impeller rotates easily on the shaft
2. Pump output or intake is restricted

a.
Verify that the output tubing is not reduced. See instructions for the proper size tubing for the specific model pump

b.
Do not reduce flow with a valve by more than 10%. Refer to the flow chart for the proper size pump for the given application. for flow chart click here.

c.
Never restrict the intake of the pump

d.
Verify that the intake, intake sponge and intake strainer are free from all debris
3. Impeller damage

a.
If there is any damage to the impeller replace the impeller and shaft

b.
If shaft shows sign of wear replace

c.
The impeller was not assembled properly. Check instructions and verify that all bushing and washers are in the correct position.

Note: An impeller rotates at 3600 times an hour in general this is the only part that requires replacement. Impeller needs to be replaced periodically depending on maintenance and application.
4. If operated as a sump pump the noise can be caused by a vibration

a.
The pump suction cup bracket and suction cups are not properly installed and are not able to absorb vibration. Only on Hyper flow pumps the vibration plate is not installed. Install according to the instructions. All units come equipped with dual vibration plates click here for picture of properly set up pump

b.
The pump is in direct contact with the side of the sump
5. Pump is operated on a wavemaker or a timer

a.
Disconnect pump immediately from the device. Read warning on label by the plug and in the instructions

b.
If the pump does not work properly after disconnected from the device. Replace impeller and shaft as the rotor has become demagnetized.
6. Pump is operated on venturi skimmer

a.
An intake venturi does make some noise as the air and water are being mixed in the impeller chamber.

b.
If the noise is from the air being sucked into the venturi can be quieted with a SEIO silencer.
PROBLEM: LOW WATER FLOW
SOLUTION
1. Intake is clogged

a.
Clean the large intake strainer

b.
Clean the intake filter sponge

c.
Clean the intake to of the pump

d.
If the problem persists large filter strainers can be added to the pump’s intake.
2. Impeller damage

a.
If there is any damage to the impeller replace the impeller and shaft

b.
If shaft shows sign of wear replace

c.
The impeller was not assembled properly. Check instructions and verify that all bushing and washers are in the correct position.
PROBLEM: SUCTION CUP WILL NOT SECURE PUMP
SOLUTION
1. Clean glass:

any excess algae will prevent suction cups to properly adhere to the glass or acrylic
2. Replace suction cups

Suction cup do not last and need to be replaced periodically.
3. Replace suction cups and bracket with magnet mount

For the larger Rio pumps Magnet mounts are available that will secure the pump in position on glass tanks up to ½”. Click here for model number
PROBLEM: EXTRA PARTS
SOLUTION
Use parts for specific application

a.
No matter how the pump is set up there will be extra parts

b.
Only use the parts you need for your specific application as the pump comes with parts to adapt to U.G. filter, plumb to a skimmer, for water circulation, hose barbs for a sump pump etc.
